DOHA,April8(Xinhua)--AstheBidenadministrationisreportedlyconsideringonceagaindetainingfamiliesthatillegallycrossintotheUnitedStates,anopinionpublishedbyAlJazeerahighlightedthetroublinghistoryofhumanrightsviolationscommittedbytheU.S.governmentagainstmigrants.

"CagesandcellshavebeenafeatureoftheU.S.immigrationsystem,underoneeuphemismoranother,sincethe19thcentury,"SarahTowle,anauthorandeducator,wroteinanopinionpiecepublishedbyAlJazeeraonThursday.

TowlespecificallypointedtotheinfamousT.DonHuttoDetentionCenter,knownasthe"babyjail,"whichwasfirstestablishedduringtheGeorgeW.Bushadministrationtoincarceraterefugeechildren.Althoughthecenterwasclosedin2009duetoreportedrightsviolations,theObamaadministrationsubsequentlyopenedthreemorefor-profit"babyjails."

Reportsfromhumanrightsgroupsrevealedthatchildreninthesefacilitiesweresubjectedtoharshconditions,includingbeingconfinedtotheircellsforupto12hoursadaywithoutaccesstobooksortoys,facingthreatsofseparationandsolitaryconfinementfor"misbehavior,"andbeinggivenonly20minutestoeatfood.

Towlefurtherhighlightedthedetrimentaleffectsofconfinementonincarceratedchildren,includingpersistenttoxicstressresultinginweightloss,hairloss,lethargy,anddepression.Manychildrenexhibitedregressionintheirdevelopmentalmilestones,withfrequenttantrumsandbed-wettingbeingprevalent.

Theauthoralsonotedthatverbal,physical,andsexualabusefurthercompoundedthesufferingenduredbytheseimprisonedchildren,andhighlightedthatduringtheyearsof2018-2019,whenDonaldTrumpwaspresident,"bordercrueltybecamefurtherentrenched"duetohisopenlyanti-immigrantstance.

TheauthoralsonotedthatBiden,despitehis"moralcampaigns,"isconsideringthereinstatementoffamilydetentioncenters,whichmaybeperceivedasanattempttogainpoliticaladvantageintheupcoming2024presidentialelection.

"Historicaltransgressionssuchasfamilydetentionsleaveindeliblemoralstains.Theyshouldneverberepeated,"Towlesaid.
